Sufjan Stevens - “They Are Night Zombies” | Happy Halloween!
Gowns - “Cherylee” | Saw EMA last night, aka Erika M. Anderson, formerly of Gowns busted out this little song in a acoustic number. If you have the patience for it, this little experimental track kicks into a whole new realm around 3:22. Then prepare for an emotional ride.
Los Super Elegantes - “Je Suis Bien” | Just heard this song from a MVFF film, the Lotus Eaters. The song is wicked fun. the Los Super Elegantes refer to them self as “mariachi punk”, the normally sing in Spanish though.
Explosions in the Sky - “Magic Hours” | From their debut album, How Strange, Innocence, this is one of the songs i fell in love with them with. This song is best use for the soundtrack to sex. Its 8min long and climaxes into some sort of visceral chaos, in which u can re-enact ur own subtext filled sex scene, a la Lust, Caution. Otherwise its still great post-rock.
So win win.
Veronica Falls - “Bad Feeling” | Classic rock meets 60s pop in a lo-fi/garage production gives Veronica Falls this mellow tone of late summer wanderings. I’m loving some of there instrumental bridges, specially when its just the guitar and the drums. My fav song, which i cannot find online is “All Eyes On You” from their self-titled album.
Explosion in the Sky - “Glittering Blackness” | Just bathe in the layers of guitar melody and forget everything else.
Sam Hart ft. Monique Macasaet - ”Kiss the Girl (Samuel E. Wright cover)” | Normally i’m not a fan of youtube covers, but this song is different.
Cosmo Jarvis - “My Day” | Ok this dude is apparently getting some love/hate responses in the UK. No matter what, i’m liking this song. It has that wild british youth thing going on here. And the video is pretty whacky too. He’s famous for his gay pirate video.
College feat. Electric Youth - “A Real Hero” | If you havent seen Drive, u should. Its probably my vote for the best movie this summer. It is, however not mainstream. This song and the hot pink letters in the opening probably really support this statement by Ryan Gosling from a NYmag interview:
Drive seems somewhat commercial.
I wanted to make Pretty in Pink with a head-smashing.
The movie also has one of the best elevator scenes that goes from light dimming love to violence to the ending of an relationship, all in 2 min.
Los Campesinos! - “By Your Hand” | Cant wait for their new album. And this would be the official first album recorded after Alek left in 09, since Romance is Boring was partly recorded while she was still around. A Shame Harriet is gone also, but this new song seems to still keep some of the old poppy tones of the band & their fun/crazy lyrics. Let’s see how this album holds out.
